Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library

The Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library strives to provide an accessible environment for all of our visitors. Our staff has completed Accessibility Training. We encourage anyone experiencing accessibility issues to seek assistance from Library staff at any service point, by phone 519-376-6623 or through email info@library.osngupl.ca.

Accessible formats for any documentation may be requested through the City of Owen Sound.

Upon request, the public access workstations can be equipped with:

  • A large print keyboard
  • A “Big Track” trackball mouse

On the Carnegie Level:

  • Merlin LCD magnifier system – Designed to enlarge and enhance images, the Merlin LCD magnifier system enables individuals with low vision to view books, photos and more in colour, black-and-white, or enhanced high-contrast positive or negative viewing modes

  • Enjoy a full range of subjects, genres, classics and award winners
  • Select from favourites for kids, teens, and adults
  • Stay up to date with 50 newspapers and 150 magazines
  • Choose your preferred format: audio, e-text or braille.
  • Download books or receive home delivery by mail

 

Eligibility

Access to the CELA collection is available to people who are unable to read conventional print due to a disability, which includes:

  • Learning disability: an impairment relating to comprehension of print
  • Physical disability: the inability to hold or manipulate a book
  • Visual disability: severe or total impairment of sight or the inability to focus or move one’s eyes.

Access to the collection is offered in a number of ways

  • Download books or magazines to your computer or mobile device
  • Download books or magazines to a DAISY player over a wireless connection without using a computer
  • Receive audio CDs or braille mailed directly to your home.

  • Individual magnifying sheets are available for use in the Library from the Circulation Desk
  • Reading glasses in a variety of strengths are available for use in the Library from the Circulation Desk
  • Wireless internet access is available throughout the Library
  • A walker and a wheelchair are available for use in the Library
  • Height adjustable tables available on the main level 
  • There are two parking spaces on 1st West for individuals with Accessible Parking Permits
  • City transit buses on the Brooke route stop at the Library
  • The entrance to the Library is equipped with a ramp and automatic doors
  • An elevator provides access to all levels of the Library
  • Accessible washrooms are located on Level One
  • Service animals are welcome

Our website meets the AODA standard for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 from the World Wide Web Consortium.

The Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library is committed to providing quality Library services that are accessible to all persons who wish to obtain and use Library services delivered in adherence to the principles of dignity, independence, integration and equal opportunity.

For the purposes of AODA, the Library provides services on behalf of the City of Owen Sound, and therefore is considered, along with the City, to be a “large designated public sector organization with more than 50 employees”. The Library complies with the obligations for this sector as set out in the AODA regulations.

The Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library works with and supports the City of Owen Sound’s Multi-Year Accessibility Plan and follows policy and procedures as set out by the City.
